The Last Sentence

Same chapter in Thai ประโยคสุดท้าย

I came home that night with a heavy heart. Phon was sitting waiting for me out front, his face dark, and just as I expected, the fight began the moment I stepped through the door. It was the same fight, the same words, the same weariness. But tonight something in me was different. I stood and listened to him shouting and felt as if I were watching the whole scene from far away.

I turned it over in my mind, how long I had been unhappy. I had suffered for ten years, maybe more. I had never really counted the time I spent with him, because it hurt too much to count. I had endured enough. More than enough.

And then that sentence came again, the one that ended every fight.

“If you can’t live here, then get out of this house.”

This time I did not cry. I did not plead. I did not argue. I just looked at him, and something inside me went strangely calm, like a storm that had raged for years finally going still because there was nothing left for it to blow. I picked up my wallet and my phone. I was still in my work clothes. No clothes packed, no belongings, nothing but what I had on me. And I walked out that door.

“You’ll be back. This time I’m not coming to beg you,” his voice came after me.

I did not answer. I just kept walking. And this time I knew, all the way through, that I would never go back to that house again.
